Distance: Not a clue but a fair bit of walking and talking!
Not strictly a blog - but thought you might like to see that despite not having joined you all for a couple of weeks, I haven't been completely idle! And as we saw some beautiful rivers, railway stations and viaducts, I thought Miss Nohills in particular would like to see the evidence ....
We started with a visit to Knaresborough whilst at Pete & Val's (brother and sister-in-law). It was en route back from Harrogate where we were visiting yet another home for Alan's Dad (sadly not suitable). The weather was stunning as you can see and the town is picture perfect. The viaduct over the river Nidd drew many ooos and aahs. Val and I had a good old nose at some of the houses in town: lots had frontages on to the path so we could have a gawp inside. Excellent! Not so excellent were the rather steep gradients around the town .....
We stopped at this lovely little church in Ouseburn on the way back to Easingwold. Slightly disappointed to find that it was only built in the 1800s but it was so pretty and in a glorious setting. It was built as the church for the 'big house' nearby.
Then the next day it was on to Durham. We parked a few miles out and walked along the River Wear into the city. After a wander around, we decided to do a guided tour of the Cathedral as Alan was the only one of us not to have visited before. If you've not been it really is quite magnificent as it's set high up on a cliff overlooking a meander (I know, we all love meanders ... or is it meandering?!) of the River Wear. So much history here - sadly we had just missed an exhibition of the Lindisfarne Gospels by one day. We took so long looking around the cathedral that we ran out of time to climb the tower - 325 steps - which I reckon was just as well. What, with my knees?!
Passed these rather hunky rowers on the way back! Well, close up they looked rather fit ....
Our hotel (Quebecs) which used to be the Liberal Club. Not quite as posh as the surroundings suggest!
Our only bit of culture (there's not much of that to be had in Leeds). We felt rather guilty that all we had done was eat, drink and talk so we forced ourselves to visit the museum and library ..... and what did we find but this magnificent coffee shop!
